How to Repair a Dead Car Key

Dead Key Fob Battery
Modern key fobs let us to open trunks, doors and tailgates, without having to search for a physical key. Certain key fobs come with a built in key that can be utilized to start our vehicles. However, these fobs depend on a small battery that provides power to their remote functions. If the battery is dead and the key fob dies, it can no longer transmit the signal to activate the vehicle. There are a variety of ways to repair a dead car key fob.
First, check whether the key fob really dead. If it seems to be dead, you'll require replacing the batteries. You can do this yourself by taking the key fob off its clip or using a small flat head screwdriver to remove it. You should not use too much force or you could damage the fob. It's also important to make sure you are replacing the correct battery type. Most key fobs are the CR2032 3-Volt battery, however some models may require a different type. Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keysfobs fell off the small key ring on the top, where it joins the keyfob. It's made of plastic or soft metal. I've done a hole in the wall and then wet-sanded the area to make it more durable. But I suspect that's not helping.
I've also tried wrapping the broken part of the ring with clear tape, but that didn't seem much better. It's a shame, because I rely on the small split ring to keep my keys in the right place.
If the case for the key fob is damaged it is usually possible to remove the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't already dead). There are online kits available to help, but they usually only offer an interim fix. It might be better to take it to a mechanic who can swap out the battery and reprogram the key fob. You can also purchase an updated case at a locksmith or home improvement stores. They are not likely to be as costly as an entirely new key fob.
